Pastoral Transition Prayer & Meditation Focus for the Week of June 25, 2018

Greetings Family,

Ponder these thoughts from the daughter of Dr. E. K. Bailey, Cokiesha L. Bailey, found in his book, “Farther In and Deeper Down”.

“… My heart leaps as I consider God’s faithfulness. When we are sick, He is faithful. When we are well, He is faithful. When we are at our best, He is faithful; and when we have reached our lowest point, He is faithful. “ à (Page 214); Author: Dr. E .K. Bailey}

For this week (June 25 through July 1), we beseech you (once again) to ‘pray aloud’ and meditate on the prayer themes and the words from these beautiful songs. Trust and Engage. If possible, let's pray together during the 7am morning hour, 7pm evening hour or 12:00 noon time-frame.

Prayer Themes and Scriptures

Believe, God has the answers – [I Thessalonians 5:17]

Sweet Hour of Prayer (verse 1)

Sweet hour of prayer
Sweet hour of prayer
That calls me from a world of care
And bids me at my Father's throne
Make all my wants and wishes known
In seasons of distress and grief
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempter's snare
By Thy return, sweet hour of prayer (credited to William W. Walford, 1845)

Believe, God has the answers – [Romans 12:12]

What A Friend We Have In Jesus (verses 1-3)

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there. (credited to Joseph M. Scriven, 1855)

Believe, God has the answers – [Matthew 11:28-30]

I’ll Trade My Worries For Worship

I’ll trade my worries for worship.

I’ll trade my problems for praise

I’ll leave them all in the hands of the master

And bless His Holy Name

Jesus knows how to fix it

So the victory I’ll claim

I’m focused on his promise

Because it’s already done in Jesus name

When God’s in control, it all works out

When he’s in control, it all works for my good

So I’ll give it all to Jesus

And I won’t worry, but I will worship (Credited to Derrick Hall, Allen Temple Minister of Music)

  • Sunday School Lesson (07/1) – Parable of the Unforgiving Servant
    • Matthew 18:21-35 (NKJV): 21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ 27 Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. 28 “But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you [b]all.’ 30 And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. 32 Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. 33 Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’ 34 And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. 35 “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”

Pastoral Transition Scripture & Meditation Focus For The Week of June 18, 2018

Greetings Family,

Ponder these thoughts from the author of the book, “Farther In and Deeper Down”.

“What wonderful things God does in His children when they are forced to wait! Sitting in God’s waiting room is never fun or comfortable, but it’s where the child of God learns the most about the character of God and the depth of their faith. “ (Page 44); Author: Dr. E .K. Bailey}

For this week (June 18 through June 24), we beseech you (once again) to ‘pray aloud’ and meditate on the prayer themes and the scripture verses from the Psalms. Trust and Engage. If possible, let's pray together during the 7am morning hour, 7pm evening hour or 12:00 noon time-frame.

Prayer Themes and Scriptures

  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Psalm 34:1-4; 8 (NIV): 1 I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. 2 I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. 3 Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together. 4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. 8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Psalm 5:1-3 (NIV): 1 Listen to my words, Lord, consider my lament. 2 Hear my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. 3 In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.
  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Psalm 145:1-3 (GNT): 1 I will proclaim your greatness, my God and king; I will thank you forever and ever. 2 Every day I will thank you; I will praise you forever and ever. 3 The Lord is great and is to be highly praised; his greatness is beyond understanding.
  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Psalm 23 (KJV): 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
  • Sunday School Lesson (06/24) – Reaping God’s Justice
    • Luke 16:19-31 (KJV): 19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Pastoral Transition Scripture & Meditation Focus For The Week of June 11, 2018

Greetings Family,

“Never underestimate the power of a single prayer”.

Quoted from the book - “Draw the Circle”; Author – Mark Batterson; page 61.

For this week (June 11 through June 17), we beseech you (once again) to ‘pray aloud’ and meditate on the prayer themes and the scripture verses from the “Psalms”. Trust and Engage. If possible, let's pray together during the 7am morning hour, 7pm evening hour or 12:00 noon time-frame.

Prayer Themes and Scriptures

  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Psalm 51:10-12 (KJV): 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
    • Psalm 27:13-34 (NIV): 13 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
  • Sunday School Lesson (6/17) – Jesus Teaches About Justice
    • Matthew 15:1-9 (KJV): 1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, 2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. 3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. 5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; 6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. 7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ 28 He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he replied, ‘No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. 30 Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’” 31 He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” 33 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.

Pastoral Transition Scripture & Meditation Focus for the week of May 28 2018

Greetings Family,

Ponder these thoughts from the author of the book, “Farther In and Deeper Down”.

“God may not answer our cry in the way we expect, but He always displays His glory in our personal experiences. “ à (Page 23); Author: Dr. E K. Bailey}

For this week (May 28 through June 3), we beseech you (one again) to ‘pray aloud’ and meditate on the prayer themes and the scripture verses from the “Psalms”. Just try it. Trust and Engage. Please add some of your favorite psalms to this list. If possible, let's pray together during the 7am morning hour, 7pm evening hour or 12:00 noon time-frame.

    • Psalm 119:66 (KJV): 66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.
  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Psalm 139:1-10 (KJV): 1 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. 2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. 3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. 5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. 7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Psalm 145:1-10 (GNT): 1 I will proclaim your greatness, my God and king; I will thank you forever and ever. 2 Every day I will thank you; I will praise you forever and ever. 3 The Lord is great and is to be highly praised; his greatness is beyond understanding. 4 What you have done will be praised from one generation to the next; they will proclaim your mighty acts. 5 They will speak of your glory and majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful deeds. 6 People will speak of your mighty deeds, and I will proclaim your greatness. 7 They will tell about all your goodness and sing about your kindness. 8 The Lord is loving and merciful, slow to become angry and full of constant love. 9 He is good to everyone and has compassion on all he made. 10 All your creatures, Lord, will praise you, and all your people will give you thanks.
  • Sunday School Lesson (5/27) – Justice and Sabbath Laws
    • Matthew 12:1-14 (KJV): 1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. 3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; 4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? 6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. 7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. 9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: 10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. 11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. 13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. 14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

    • Psalm 145:1-21 (KJV): 1 I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. 2 Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever. 3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. 4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. 5 I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works. 6 And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness. 7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness. 8 The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. 9 The Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. 10 All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord; and thy saints shall bless thee. 11 They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; 12 To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom. 13 Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. 14 The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down. 15 The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. 16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing. 17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works. 18 The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. 19 He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them. 20 The Lord preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy. 21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.
  • Sunday School Lesson (5/27) – Rejoicing in Restoration
    • Psalm 34:1-10 (KJV): 1 I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. 4 I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. 5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. 6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. 8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. 9 O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. 10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.
    • Hebrews 2:17:18 (KJV): 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

Pastoral Transition Scripture & Meditation Focus for the week of May 14 2018

Greetings Family,

Ponder these thoughts from the author of the book, “Discerning The Voice Of God”.

“The Holy Spirit is to us what the control tower is to an airplane pilot. The Spirit’s ability to see what we cannot see, and then communicate information to us based on His knowledge, provides us with insight we could never obtain through onboard instruments alone. “ (Page 38); Author: Priscilla Shirer}

For this week (May 14 through May 20), we beseech you (once again) to ‘pray aloud’ and meditate on the prayer themes and the scripture verses on giving, trusting, and believing.

Just where it states, (Fill-in Name), make it personal by adding your name. Then repeat the process twice more, praying for another person or group or committee or church or family member. While it may seem un-conventional, we are simply asking you to trust and engage.

If possible, let's pray together during the 7am morning hour, 7pm evening hour or 12:00 noon time-frame.

Prayer Themes and Scriptures

  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Exodus 35:21a (NLT)
      • (Fill-in Name), 21 All whose hearts were stirred and whose spirits were moved came and brought their sacred offerings to the Lord.
    • Luke 6:38 (NIV)

  • Believe, God has the answers
    • 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (NLT)
      • (Fill-in Name), 6 Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” 8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.
  • Believe, God has the answers
    • Proverbs 3:5-6 (NRSV)
      •  5 Trust in the Lord (Fill-in Name), with all your heart,

    • Ephesians 3:20-21 (KJV)
      • (Fill-in Name) 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

  •  Sunday School Lesson (5/20th) – Remembering with Joy
    • Leviticus 25:1-12 (NKJV)
      • 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a sabbath to the Lord. 3 Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit; 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath to the Lord. You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard. 5 What grows of its own accord of your harvest you shall not reap, nor gather the grapes of your untended vine, for it is a year of rest for the land. 6 And the sabbath produce of the land shall be food for you: for you, your male and female servants, your hired man, and the stranger who dwells with you, 7 for your livestock and the beasts that are in your land—all its produce shall be for food. 8 ‘And you shall count seven sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years; and the time of the seven sabbaths of years shall be to you forty-nine years. 9 Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land. 10 And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family. 11 That fiftieth year shall be a Jubilee to you; in it you shall neither sow nor reap what grows of its own accord, nor gather the grapes of your untended vine. 12 For it is the Jubilee; it shall be holy to you; you shall eat its produce from the field.

Pastoral Transition Update - May 6, 2018

The Senior Pastor of Allen Temple Baptist Church, Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Jr., has announced his plans to retire on January 31, 2019. If the church completes the process earlier, his retirement date could be as early as September 30, 2018. During this transition process, the Senior Pastor, J. Alfred Smith, Jr., and the Assistant Pastor, Dr. Jacqueline Thompson, will continue in their respective roles, as Allen Temple Baptist Church functions normally, in accordance with God’s will and the stated mission of the church.

Over the last 8 months, since our Senior Pastor’s announcement of retirement, God has continued to bless the Allen Temple community as the church is experiencing steady new member growth, a thriving Children and Youth Ministry, the strongest financial stability in years, plans to retire the Family Life Center Mortgage – you will hear more about the “Burn the Mortgage Campaign”, and an orderly transition process that models Christian love and unity. The Pulpit Search Committee was elected by the church at the First Quarter Church Business Meeting on Saturday, April 28, and will be responsible for the process of managing the Pastoral search process and bringing potential candidates forward for consideration by the church. The Pulpit Search Committee members are:

Sister Mary Amos
Deacon Ted Carter (Committee Chairperson)
Rev. Dr. Brenda Guess
Deacon Vangeria Harvey
Sister Lyniece Hill
Dr. Judy Martin-Holland
Deaconess René Mastin
Dr. Jesse Perry
Sister Sheila Powe-Fuller
Sister Dalisa Roberts-Rucker
Brother Saul Rodriguez
Deacon Michael Perrilliat
Deacon Enitan Adesanya
Rev. Dr. Martha C. Taylor
Sister Linda Walls-Brown

Pulpit Search Committee Alternates:
Sister Gloria Anthony-Oliver
Dr. Donna Thompson

Let’s continue in prayer for this group of servants who will be a part of the sacred process to understand where our congregation has been, identify where we are as a church family, and consider the ministerial leadership that is God’s will for Allen Temple Baptist Church. The Pulpit Search Committee will be consecrated on our First Sunday service, on May 6, with the complete listing of the names and alternates listed on the Pastoral Transition web page at Allen-Temple.org.

As we continue seeking the will of God and His discernment through the processes of prayer and meditation, we invite you to not only incorporate our Scripture & Meditation Focus into your daily life via the weekly newsletter insert but also the entire archive on the Church website (Allen-Temple.org; click Pastoral Transition on the top blue bar of the home page), but to also join us at our Thursday Pastoral Transition Prayer Hours in the Sanctuary. As Allen Temple enters this new phase of transition, 1 Corinthians 12:14 reminds us; “For the body is not one member, but many”. The body is not supported by one person, but by all of us through unity. Let us continue to be active in our faith, pray continuously, love each other, and hold onto what is good, as we celebrate God’s continued love, mercy, and grace for the Allen Temple Baptist Church Community.

Pastoral Transition Prayer & Meditation Focus for the Week of April 30, 2018

Greetings Family,

Ponder these thoughts from the author of the book, “Discerning The Voice Of God”.
